About Jon Hunter

Jon with Papua New Guinea BuddiesI first got interested in photography back in high school and even then I think I always leaned towards wildlife photography. I grew up, and still live today in the Pacific Northwest area of the United States. This is a place of great natural beauty and still has lots of pristine country to enjoy. I spent a great deal of time in the Olympic Mountains hiking and fishing and I think it was there that I first started to try to capture my fascination with wildlife on film.

About 3 years ago I switched completely over to digital and I love it! Traveling with digital files is so much easier than begging for hand checks on 30-40 rolls of film! I also of course like the creative aspect of printing my own images with the convenience of Photoshop.

Grizzly Photo ShootI shoot all Nikon gear and typically travel with a pair of D2x's, a 70-200mm 2.8 VR, a 17-55mm 2.8 DX, a 12-24 f4 DX, a 1.4 tele extender and a SB 800 flash unit. Along with the usual miscellaneous accessories. When I really need to reach out there I bring the 200-400mm VR or the the big kahuna, the 600mm f4. I also find a real benefit is a Pentax WP Optio water proof 5mp "shirtpocket camera".

Over the last few years I have received a lot of requests from folks that wanted to see more of my photographs and perhaps have the opportunity to purchase some of my prints. It has taken me a long time to finally put together a website, but it seems like the natural progression at this point. I think as much as anything I just like being able to look at them again myself!

Jon in Antarctica Swimming with PenguinI've had the good fortune to do more than my share of traveling in recent years. It seems that traveling was a good reason for photography and photography was a good reason for traveling! It's been keeping me busy!

In addition to my travels, about ten years ago I built a small beach house in the remote southwest corner of Costa Rica. This has given me great access to the fantastic photo opportunities there. One of my favorite pastimes when I'm there is to go up a nearby river taking pictures of the birds, cayman, monkeys, dugouts and the general river life which still has a very authentic flavor to it.

Jon on the Trail in the North Central AndesI've always loved wildlife and photography seems to get me out there and experiencing more of it than I would otherwise manage. I also have been very interested in witnessing and photographing third world cultures before we more "civilized" folks screw them all up.

Fortunately pursuing both subjects is often easily combined as they are still closely related. This is something most of us have lost in the process of becoming so civilized. I think that creates a lot my fascination with both subjects.

As we separate ourselves more and more from the natural world, our appreciation for images of it seems to increase. I don't try to fully define or explain this experience. I just know that for me it generates a passion which I love to pursue. My photographs; and the travels I experience to capture them; give me a great deal of pleasure and a continuing sense of the richness of life.

I hope that those who view my images; and share my wild visions; may also enjoy some sense of this richness.
